‘Tough Care’ is a tender and candid account of the time one veteran spent caring for his dying spouse (also a veteran), in which he offers advice and support to those in, or about to face, similar situations. The number of fellow baby boomers about to face these situations is huge and their time is fast approaching. Tough care is derived from the concept of tough love. My wife, Celia, proudly served in the US Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during the Vietnam Era. Years later, however, she was stricken by serious illnesses that caused her to deteriorate from a young and vivacious woman, soldier, wife, and mother, to a severely incapacitated homecare patient. In ‘Tough Care’, I explain how her downfall stemmed from Type 2 Diabetes, which ultimately led to physical paralysis, dementia, and stroke before she died (far too early) at age sixty-four. What inspired you to write this book? Both academic and industry studies have determined that homecare has been more prevalent than one might imagine in the US, and that future caregivers will not only be older, but will also have to simultaneously cope with ailments of their own. This compassionate and touching memoir reveals the many lessons a dedicated and devoted spouse learned in a marriage that was filled with love, respect, sadness, and joy. Readers are sure to find comfort in the advice that is offered, and will find references and online links to valuable resources such as the AARP, American Legion, VFW, Military Women’s Organizations, Diabetes Foundation, Hospice Care Foundation, and Home Care Foundation particularly helpful. What was the biggest challenge you faced writing this book and how did you overcome it? It was a challenge to convert a periodic journal I kept while caring for my wife over four years into one story. I overcame it by mixing actual journal entries with background info, updates and other relevant historical research. What is your next project?

“Oracle – Sunken Earth” is book 1 in the planned 7-book Oracle series. Book 2 “Oracle – Fire Island” has also just been released. The series is about a teenage boy named Ret Cooper who cautiously undertakes the daunting task of “curing the world” with a spherical ball of curious design called the Oracle. The Oracle has six unique markings on it. Ret has the same six markings on the palms of his hands, which individually lead him to our planet’s most ancient secrets. These world mysteries guard Mother Nature’s six pure, original elements, which Ret must collect and place inside the Oracle. Ret’s knowledge grows and his powers increase with each element collected. The series is good, wholesome adventure, packed with humor, intrigue, and even a little innocent romance. What inspired you to write this book? I have always been fascinated by our planet’s ancient secrets, so that was certainly the genesis for the series. The world mysteries in book 1 are the Bermuda Triangle, the Lost City of Atlantis, and the Bimini Road. The world mysteries in book 2 are the Nazca Lines, Machu Picchu, and Easter Island. My website explains each world mystery in greater detail. I like to think that the Oracle series is an impressive blend of fact and fiction, based on real places and substantiated theories. I believe that a great story not only entertains but also educates, thus the unique writing style. What are you doing to market your book? We are requesting literary critics to write an essay on the book. The approach is to “seed the market” as much as possible. This is why, for example, the eBook price for book 1 is only $0.99. The more buzz we can create, the better, and I suppose it all begins with reader feedback. Any advice for other writers/indie authors out there? Yes, don’t get discouraged, keep going. It is a great feeling to see hard work in book form. Tell us a little about your book.
Haghuf, respected elder among the unseen goblins, has only scorn for humans. Yet he is drawn into friendship with a human aristocrat by The Dance, the spiritual exaltation of life itself which is central to the goblins’ existence. Count Anton – human, magician, shapeshifter – rules the human world above. When an unwitting human wanders accidentally into the caverns, a series of events is set into motion that will lead him to betray his loyalty to his own people to avoid a war that the humans cannot possibly win. Hunted by humans who feel he has betrayed them by his friendship with the goblins, and unwelcome in the goblin world where all humans are considered the enemy, he will be thrown into a deeper world, where even the goblins have reason to be afraid… What inspired you to write this book? One day I was walking home thinking about some political activism when the lines came into my head: ‘We are not like you. We do not glory in having power over our own kind, or imagining that we do.’ It was something that a human couldn’t say to another human and so became a goblin, and the society of goblins grew from there. I threw in some magicians to see what they might do and they took over and became the ruling class among the humans. The story effectively wrote itself and bled over into two sequels. What are you doing to market your book? Following advice from various sources including working with Twitter and other social networking, keeping up the blog, running discounts and freebies. How have sales been? Where have you had the most success? It’s early days, but discount coupons on Smashwords have been the most effective so far. I’ll be releasing a short story collection just after the sequel, Demoniac Dance comes out next month and that will go into a lot of free promotions and connect the readers back to the main series. |
